The South Street Seaport Museum announces the Bowne Printers 2016 Workshops. Your tweens and teens can enjoy monthly workshops in custom stationery, fresh prints, and wood type. Bowne Printers create contemporary artisanal projects using the traditional methods and historic presses that once documented marine trade.

Custom Stationery will be offered from 1p – 4p on 3/5, 4/2, 5/7, 6/7, 7/2, & 8/6. This three-hour workshop introduces participants to typesetting and letterpress printing of small runs of custom work. Students will choose from a selection of the Museum’s vintage lead type to design their own personalized stationery. Expert printers will guide the participants through the process of setting type, proofing on a Vandercook cylinder press, fine-tuning designs, and printing a final run on a 19th century tabletop platen press. They will learn how to operate the presses themselves and will go home with twenty personal stationery items. Tickets are $75 each.

Fresh Prints will be offered from 7p – 9p on 2/25, 3/31, 4/28, 5/26, 6/30, 7/28, 8/25. Bowne Printers will stay open late the last Thursday of every month for Fresh Prints, a printing party that showcases multiple presses in the collection. For each event, a team of designers and printers will launch a series of limited edition cards and prints on press all evening. Attendees have the opportunity to pull prints of their own and learn about the traditional craft of letterpresses. Admission is $10 or $8 for Museum Members, and visitors go home with a package of all three prints pulled live that night.
