FiDi Families was recently invited to attend the Broadway Show “Tuck Everlasting” with The Moms Network. The show was nominated for a Tony award this season. The new musical is based on the award-winning novel by Natalie Babbitt, which tells the emotional and fantastical tale of 11-year-old Winnie Foster who is in search for adventure. Winnie’s adventures with the immortal Tuck family are enticing and she is forced to make a choice to return to her family or join the Tucks on their never-ending journey.
The story is filled with gorgeous scenery and costumes and the cast does a wonderful job of connecting the emotions of the story and the songs, directly to the audience. As a parent, I found the question of immortality an interesting one. We all joke about the fountain of youth, but what if we found it. Would we want to live a full life and depart the earth, or stand still in time, forever, with the opportunity to stay the same age, forever. It’s a gilded cage question and Winnie is forced to consider her options. My take away from the show is to live in the moment and to enjoy the life you are given, without regrets and to appreciate the time that you have on earth. Of course, I would love to watch my family tree continue, but at what price? That is the question that is explored in this beautifully acted musical.
“You don’t have to live forever, you just have to really live”.
Following the show, invited guests from The Moms Network were invited to a “Talk Back” with the cast of “Tuck Everlasting”. It was great to engage with them, ask them questions and feel their passion for the show.
Tuck Everlasting is directed and choreographed by the tony award winner Casey Nicholaw. Making her debut on Broadway, Sarah Charles Lewis plays Winnie Foster and is nominated for “Best Actress in a Musical” by Suzi Bass Awards. She is joined by Robert Lenzi, Carolee Carmello, Andrew Keenan-Bolger, and Michael Park who play the Tucks.
