Transportation NYC at the Skyscraper Museum. Your kids will be introduced to the many different modes of transportation available in large cities today like trains, ferries, and bikes. Through a group reading of Christoph Niemann’s picture book Subway, they will learn about one of the most popular forms of city transit, the subway. Afterwards the young planners will then design their favorite way to get around the city.
The Skyscraper Museum hosts rotating Family Programs on Saturday mornings. These events engage children in exploring urbanism, architecture, and engineering through hands-on activities. Children’s will learn through images, film, and models of skyscrapers as well as changing exhibitions in the gallery. Registration is requested by Friday at 5p.
Niemann navigates New York’s subterranean system in this playful love letter to public transportation. Follow two children and their father, pictured as transit map-style stick figures, who spend a rainy day exploring routes. The trains occasionally acquire some light personification. The tone is positive, avoiding the rate hikes and construction, but Niemann finds pleasure in unexpected places, too. His use of pitch black backdrops make the colors of the lines explode. Celebrate imaginations of transportation-obsessed children. Ages 2-5. (June)
