The Best Summer Activity Around: Reading
The Best Summer Activity Around: Reading

Summer is a great break from the regular routine of school and life and a wonderful excuse to explore and play in the sun. But as parents across the country know, it’s not really sustainable to play outside and go on outings all day everyday–at some point the sun starts to zap your energy and it’s time to come inside. But, going indoors doesn’t mean the fun has to stop though! My mom is a big proponent of reading, and as I was growing up, she went to great lengths to ensure that my siblings and I developed a love of reading as well. So when it was too hot to go outside and we needed some decompression time, one of our activities of choice was to have a read-a-thon. I realize now how smart my mom was, because it gave her a break too! We’d scavenge the kitchen for snacks, pop popcorn, get drinks and snuggle into couches, chairs and pillow stacks. Then we’d grab our book(s)—the number required to entertain us for an hour plus definitely varied depending on age—and hunker down for some quiet reading time for a couple of hours.
There’s something about having a read-a-thon, with the snacks and the name that made reading that much more exciting! [For more tips on how to throw a read-a-thon go here.]
