Every summer New York Harbor Sailing Foundation offers 10 weeks of sailing camp right here in New York Harbor. Operation Optimist teaches kids (aged 8 to 13) how to sail on Optimist dinghies near the Statue of Liberty. Over the course of one week these kids build confidence, learn self-reliance, and gain a unique and amazing skill. Many kids return year after year, and those interested can make a goal of advancing to the racing team. This is a sport that all kids can parlay into a lifelong hobby. . . or help them get into a college that has a sailing team!
Camp counselors meet students at 9 am in both Manhattan (at the World Financial Center Ferry Terminal) and Jersey City (at the Manhattan Yacht Club). Parents pick up their sailors from these same locations at 5 pm. There is also a Teen Sailing Academy for beginner to more active sailors aged 13 to 18.
