The weekend before Halloween tends to be a trick-or-treat weekend for kids all over Lower Manhattan. The result is candy galore and more to come as October 31st is the ultimate in candy collecting for kids of all ages. This also results in parents like myself eating too much candy and trying to hide it from the kids, with no success. But, no one wants to throw out perfectly good (and yummy) candy. Well, we have discovered the perfect solution for kids and parents and wanted to share the good news.

Operation Gratitude is an amazing organization that supports the soldiers by sending care packages to the troops. They have a Halloween effort that encourages children to donate their Halloween candy, which will in turn be sent to the troops. Children are also encouraged to write letters, donate toothpaste, toothbrushes or even dental floss to help keep soldiers teeth healthy. So, encourage your children to write a quick note to a well-deserving soldier overseas!

In Lower Manhattan, the team at Bronsky Orthodontics in Tribeca hopes to collect 100 pounds of candy to donate to Operation Gratitude. Bring up to 5 pounds of your unopened candy and earn $1 a pound for donated candy. Children can also choose to donate the money they earn to Operation Gratitude.
