Don’t Miss These Markets
Open-air markets are magical. Transforming a normal street in an instant, open to anyone, and curated to perfection, visiting a market can create core memories for any young person. Hearing new music, trying new foods, and seeing new art expands minds. Here are a few upcoming (or ongoing) markets around New York City:
Ongoing: Smorgasburg (Fridays @ WTC)
Because it’s the largest open-air market in the United States, you’ve probably heard of Smorgasburg. Held at the World Trade Center from 11am – 6pm on Fridays, Smorgasburg tends to be extremely busy.
Vendors usually sell out, but if you’re on time you can find a yakitori, a rainbow grilled cheese, Brazilian street food, or a diverse array of other treats (including gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan options). With a truly global selection of vendors, Smorgasburg puts the world on a plate.
Dragon Fest(s) (July 13th – October 13th @ multiple locations)
Dragon Fest is “an annual outdoor Chinese food & culture festival with experiential activities, tastings, and market fairs that showcases the vibrant food, art and cultural traditions from China.” The events pop up across the city, and the schedule is still growing.
Dragon Fest is on my list because the food vendors are unparalleled, often representing a brick-and-mortar business you can visit again soon. Early fall weather will likely be perfect for walking around with a bouquet of rainbow, flower-shaped dumplings and an iced tea.
India Day Parade (August 18th @ Madison Square Garden)
Hosted by the Federation of Indian Associations, the 42nd India Day Parade will bring delicious food, colorful floats, and traditional dance to the streets of NYC. Boasting 50+ marching groups and Bollywood stars, the parade will begin at 38th & Madison at 12:00pm. The entire experience is colorful, sensory, and delightful.
Alongside the parade itself is an amazing market with small businesses vendors selling art, crafts, and treats. It’s impossible to go wrong with any of the food options, so grab a mango lassi and prepare for a difficult lunch decision.
The Feast of San Gennaro & Parade (September 12th – 22nd @ Mulberry Street)
The Feast of San Gennaro, or “The Feast of All Feasts,” in Little Italy celebrates the life of San Gennaro of Naples who was Bishop of Benevento, Italy and martyred in 305 AD. The feast stretches down Mulberry Street, an 11-day celebration spanning 11 blocks. The event supports over 30 great charities and organizations, serves great food, and provides great fun to all who attend.
The Feast of San Gennaro originates in the Neapolitan block of Little Italy. According to the website, “For generations, this feast has always been an important part of our neighborhood not only representing the Saint Himself but also representing our ancestors, our culture, and our traditions.”
