Celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day at the National Museum of the American Indian

Learn about the Indigenous Taíno peoples Christopher Columbus encountered on the island Guanahaní on October 12, 1492. Explore the new exhibition, Taíno: Native Heritage and Identity in the Caribbean | Taíno: herencia e identidad indígena en el Caribe and meet with Jorge Estévez (Taíno) as he addresses common questions and myths associated with Columbus Day. Gain a deeper understanding of the history, culture, and living legacies of Taíno people on Indigenous Peoples Day.

In this interactive space, visitors of all ages can celebrate Indigenous Peoples day by learning about Native scientific discoveries and inventions that impact our daily lives. From foods and medicines to the engineering principles of bridge-building, learn about the remarkable contributions that Native people from the western hemisphere have given to the modern world. Stop by the iAC Classroom for hands-on artmaking inspired by Taíno suns designs or create a written reflection to share your acknowledgment and recognition of Indigenous Peoples Day.
