The National Museum of the American Indian hosts a children’s film series for kids of all ages. It’s a great way to introduce your toddlers to the history of the American Indian by watching some amazing live-action shorts and animations, especially for children. Not to mention that it is a great indoor destination for families to take advantage of and absorb some culture at the same time! Check out this great Smithsonian museum and enjoy exhibits, workshops, film screenings and lectures for adults and children.
Âs NutayuneÂn/We Still Live Here: An award-winning documentary, it explores the cultural resiliency of the Wampanoag, the tribe that greeted the Pilgrims at Plymouth in 1620, and tells the story of Jesse Little Doe Baird’s efforts to restore Native language fluency to members of southern New England’s Wampanoag communities. Screens at 12p and 2p.
Stories from the Seventh Fire: Animations for children based on the paintings of Anishinaabe artist Norval Morrisseau tell the stories of the trickster Wesakechak. Screens at 10:30a and 11:45a.
In Our Language: Lively short works present the significance and pleasure of speaking one’s own indigenous language. Screens at 1p and 3p.
Family Workshop: Art of the Great Plains – Ledger Art and Activity: A brief overview of Plains Indian ledger art. Create your own drawing on ledger paper using crayons, colored pencils, and stencils. Mondays through Saturdays.
Hours: Daily from 10a – 5p and Thursday’s until 8p (closed December 25th)
