From Curiosity to Competence: Local STEM Classes for Kids

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is more than just a trend—it's a powerful tool that fosters curiosity, problem-solving, and creativity in young minds.

In our globally competitive world, the skills children develop at an early age can shape their future success. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is more than just a trend—it’s a powerful tool that fosters curiosity, problem-solving, and creativity in young minds.

These local STEM programs introduce foundational concepts of critical thinking, innovation, and inquiry, equipping kids with the knowledge and confidence to thrive in tomorrow’s world.

NY Kids Club Battery Park City (393 South End Ave.)
The NY Kids Club of Battery Park City offers a 17-session fall class called Baby Art & STEM Explorers, where babies 5-13 months old and their adults will explore a creative lineup of creative STEM and Art activities. Babies are encouraged to explore, socialize, and build critical small motor skills.

For $918 ($54 per 45-minute class), you and your baby can enjoy a variety of sensory activities and art projects led by professional instructors (and avoid home cleanup). The class is ideal for those who want to prioritize bonding time that keeps the mess out of the house.

The New York Academy of Sciences (115 Broadway)
The New York Academy of Sciences, located in the heart of the Financial District, always has a range of events suitable for older kids. Their network of high school students, the Junior Network, and 10-week Innovation Challenges are just a few of a range of programs geared towards inspiring K-12 students who are considering STEM studies and careers.

Students are offered a free first year of Young membership upon enrollment in an eligible research program. Young members can submit to a student journal of peer-reviewed, pre-collegiate research, access educational development content, and enjoy hearing about the exciting opportunities in STEM fields.

NYC STEM Club (65 Broadway)
The NYC STEM Club is an educational center focused on giving students an edge. Founded by a FiDi parent, the NYC STEM Club’s comprehensive academic coursework is a response to “the inadequacy of the existing Department of Education (DoE) curriculum in preparing students for the rigor of top high school and colleges and the global job market.”

Courses are split by age level into elementary, middle school, and high school categories. STEM-specific programming includes coding courses and testing bootcamps. Prices are not listed publicly online.

The GIANT Room (550 W 28th St.)
The GIANT Room is fostering STEM passions in kids ages 3-12. Run by Dr. Azadeh Jamalian and Dr. Jessica Mezei, both education PhDs, the GIANT Room offers a maker’s space for kids and STEM education.

The GIANT Room offers customized STEM club programming for small groups, taught by top instructors from local universities as Columbia, NYU, and Parsons/The New School. At $75/session split among participants (up to 5, so $15/student), these classes can be held either online or in person at The GIANT room. They also run in-person events and workshops.
