All of these locations are ideal for a day in the sun where you can go swimming, build sandcastles, and lounge under an umbrella while bonding with your family.

Rockaway Beach
As New York City’s only legal surfing beach, Rockaway Beach always draws a big crowd in the summertime months. But the best part about this beach is its easy accessibility from all boroughs. Beachgoers can take the subway or the ferry, which are both in walking distance to the sand. For those who have a car, a drive to the beach is about a 45-minute drive from the Financial District.

Jones Beach
Anyone who grew up on Long Island knows the ins and outs of Jones Beach. Located in Wantagh, this beach is located on the south shore and is about a two-hour drive from NYC. There are six different fields to choose from that all offer sandy expanses for a perfect day with the family. You’ll also find a mini gold course, volleyball courts, shuffleboard and even a swimming pool. There is a $10 fee per car to park at each field.

Jacob Riis Park
Located a few miles away from Rockaway Beach, you’ll find Jacob Riis Park. There is a $20 parking fee that lets you enjoy a mile-long beach, boardwalks and a mini golf course. At bay 9, you’ll find drink and food vendors that offer everything from ice cream and fried fish to tacos and burgers. Those who are 21 and over, can head to one of the location’s outdoor bars to sip on refreshing cocktails or beers.

Orchard Beach
As the Bronx’s only public beach, Orchard Beach is about a mile long but offers beautiful views of nearby City Island. This beach is located on the Long Island Sound and will offer your family a tranquil and relaxing day on the sand. There are a few concessions stands to purchase food and beverages as well as picnic areas and volleyball and basketball courts. Parking is between $8 to $10 depending on the day of the week.

Long Beach
If you are looking to make a day (or weekend!) trip with your family Long Beach is one of your best options. It is about a 90-minute drive from the Financial District or an hour train ride on the LIRR. You’ll have to pay an entrance fee, but it’s worth the price since this location offers a boardwalk for biking and miles of sandy beaches. There are a ton of bars and restaurants in walking distance of the sand that are family friendly and extremely affordable.

Coney Island Beach
A traditional NYC summer is incomplete without a trip to Coney Island Beach. You can mix a day at the beach with a day filled of adventure by visiting one of their popular amusement parks. You and your little ones can unwind and lounge on three miles of sandy beaches that is only a train ride away.

Fort Tilden Beach
If you are looking for a secluded area with small crowds, Fort Tilden Beach is a must. This relaxing oasis is located between Rockaway Beach and Jacob Riis Park and offers three miles of sand to beachgoers. Beware, there are no lifeguards on duty or swimming allowed, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy wading in the water or boogie-boarding with the kids. There aren’t any vendors or restaurants on the beach, so be sure to pack enough snacks and beverages to last you all day!

Robert Moses
Right down the street from Jones Beach on Long Island, you’ll find Robert Moses State Park. This five-mile beachfront has everything you need for a day spent under the sun with your loved ones including picnic tables, grills and outdoors showers. It draws a very small crowd and only costs $10 per car for a day of parking. Grab your towels and umbrella and pack and cooler filled with your favorite food and drinks for a memorable day on the sand.

Brighton Beach
For more of a relaxed vibe, head to Brighton Beach in Brooklyn. This beach is located a few subway stops before Coney Island Beach but has far less people and noise. If you have a car, you’ll find metered street parking for the day for easy accessibility. There’s not much more than the sand and the boardwalk here, but it is definitely worth the trip.

South Beach
Hop on the Staten Island Ferry and make your way to South Beach, which was completely refurbished after Hurricane Sandy.
