Shakespeare Downtown. This new, non-profit acting company evolved from 11 successful theatrical productions at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. Shakespeare Downtown’s goal is to give audiences a chance to experience Shakespeare’s plays as they were 400 years ago. Enjoy these free, open-air performances of Romeo and Juliet at Castle Clinton National Monument, a historic fort in The Battery.
Shakespeare Downtown’s director, Geoffrey Horne, studied acting and directing with Lee Strasberg and is a member of the Actor’s Studio. His work includes The Bridge on the River Kwai, Bonjour Tristesse, The Twilight Zone, The Hitchcock Hour, and The Outer Limits. He teaches at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, where he has directed many plays including The Seagull, Romeo and Juliet, and A Streetcar Named Desire.
Artistic Director, Billie Andersson, has been producer and leading actress in plays by Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams and Anton Chekhov. She studied acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute and with William Esper and currently plays Juliet in Shakespeare Downtown’s Romeo and Juliet.
Keep in mind that this production is presented on Tuesdays and Saturdays in June and does not have an intermission. Tickets are available starting at 5p the day of the performance.
