Governor’s Island – a New York City destination for families
New York City is home to some incredible landmarks, destinations and iconic works of art. But, many forget about one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in the Big Apple. That place is Governor’s Island and continues to be a best-kept secret, though word does seem to be getting out. This oasis is located less than 1,000 yards from the most southern part of the City and feels like another world. It’s a great destination for families, for visitors and for long time residents, looking for a fun place to visit without the hassle of renting a car, booking a hotel or driving in NYC traffic. Take advantage of wide-open bike baths, perfect for surreys, tandem bikes and tricycles, for lazy strolls on wheels. More competitive folks will love the miles of bike path to get their fitness in a car free zone. Kids and grownups alike have fallen in love with Hammock Alley, a quiet spot near the water that is perfect for a quick nap or a fun swing for kids. The playground is a great spot for kids and parents enjoy the chance to let the kids get their energy out in a safe environment. Governor’s Island is home to the Admiral’s House, which was constructed in 1843 and continues to inspire visitors with its architecture and history.
Check out the newest installation on this 172 acre destination “The Hills”, which opened this summer. Rising 70 feet above sea-level, the Hills will allow hundreds of thousands of visitors to enjoy breathtaking never-before-seen views of the Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor.
This amazing destination continues to evolve and transform and amenities include restrooms, drinking fountains, food trucks, a cafe, an ATM as well as gift shops, exhibits, bike rentals, a sand volleyball court and FIGMENT mini-golf. The National Parks has great information available to educate visitors and offers tours of Castle Williams and has a wonderful bookstore.
FiDi Families Insiders: Ferries run from the Battery Maritime Terminal in Lower Manhattan seven days a week. On weekends, visitors can board at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6. Children under 12 are FREE.

Cost: $2 round trip for adults and kids over 12. Weekend morning ferries are free, before 11:30am.
