The new family film Inside Out hits movie theaters today and if pre-screenings are any indication, the filmmakers have an instant classic on their hands. The film follows the main character Riley, as her family makes a move from the quiet life in the Midwest to the exciting world of San Francisco. The move creates a mix of emotions for the young character, not unlike many kids, as they enter new schools, encounter new experiences and learn about the world in general. As all parents know, helping kids figure out how to deal with emotions can be difficult. The filmmakers showcase the emotions that she experiences through the talented voices of Amy Poehler (the emotion of Joy), Bill Hader (the voice of Fear), Lewis Black takes on the role of Anger, Mindy Kaling voices Disgust and Phyllis Smith takes on the role of Sadness. As Riley’s emotions take control and either try to help or hurt her, it is up to her to navigate her new world with thoughtfulness and trepidation.
It’s a great movie for kids that are entering their tween years. But, truth be told, at the pre-screening that our crew attended, the first and second graders were mesmerized by the characters and storyline. It’s also a perfect film for kids that are going through a tough family transition such as separation or can help kids learn about empathy for their friends.
Fandango Family Room has created some great DIY projects, to help share the story of Inside Out. One of our favorites is a memory jar. It was originally created as a summer project, but the potential to make this project a family tradition is hard to miss.
