Come meet Mary Pickersgill (portrayed by Kim Hanley of American Historical Theatre) as we celebrate Women’s History Month at Castle Clinton National Monument
In 1813 Mary Pickersgill made the Star Spangled Banner that flew over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. Francis Scott Key would write the National Anthem after seeing this flag flying in the “dawn’s early light.” The flag was commissioned by General Armistead who wanted a flag “ so large that the British would have no trouble seeing it from afar.” Mary sewed two flags but it was the 42’ X 30’ flag that flew over the fort and is now preserved at the Smithsonian Institute today.
