New York City is the city that never sleeps and continues to evolve with new and interesting exhibits and things to do. But, have you ever consider a stay-cation in the Big Apple? Instead of packing up the kids, making arrangements for a dog walker or cat sitter, not to mention driving for hours with the kiddos, consider a getaway in your own city.

We were recently invited by the Millennium Hilton to visit their 55 floor hotel with some incredible views of Lower Manhattan. The hotel boasts 98 suites, which are perfect for families, reunions, wedding preparations and Mom’s night out mixers. Our corner suite allowed us stunning views of the Oculus, which is a part of the World Trade Center complex, known as Westfield. The hotel property was originally opened in 1992, though the ownership has changed hands over the years, and of course, the attacks on 9/11 closed the hotel for a time but was reopened in 2003.

The most appealing aspect for family travel was the opportunity to book a suite, which made our staycation feel like a luxury getaway. The kids would probably consider the beautiful indoor pool as the best aspect of this downtown hotel. Though, I would also say that the cookies and milk that greeted us in our room, upon arrival was a big hit. We loved our room service and loved getting into our PJ’s and having a nice dinner with incredible views. But, the fact that the hotel is located in Lower Manhattan, really gives a visitor a chance to explore one of the oldest neighborhoods in New York City without ever having to take mass transit. There are enough things to do in Lower Manhattan, that a stay at the downtown Millennium Hotel is a perfect destination for a staycation or a true getaway vacation that is designed to explore New York City.

Our favorite downtown things to do in Lower Manhattan are all within walking distance from the hotel or a 2 stop jump on the subway. Taxi’s are always an option, but to truly get the NYC experience, our recommendation is to walk or take the subway.

Federal Hall National Memorial – located steps away from the iconic New York Stock Exchange, Federal Hall is recognizable by the larger than life statue of George Washington on the steps leading up to this historic landmark, built in the late 1800’s. The National Parks Service operates Federal Hall with free tours from Monday through Friday, free of charge.
